Open Letters Monthly mourns the death of actor Omar Sharif, who captivated movie audiences in everything from Doctor Zhivago to his beautiful starring turn in Monsieur Ibrahim and who achieved cinematic immortality by slowly riding out of the desert in David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia. To everything he did he lent the kind of easy grace which, as the Egyptian poet put it, "flowers the way."
