Helen Thomas

helen_thomasOpen Letters Monthly mourns the death at age 92 of veteran reporter and White House correspondent Helen Thomas, the first woman in history to interrogate power in an official capacity for a living. A colleague of hers at UPI once said, "If I were president, her questions would terrify me," and a U.S. President responded, "As President, her questions terrify me." For over half a century, she wielded the power of the press in a sacred trust with the people; the highest tribute her colleagues could pay her memory would be to keep doing that.
